Dear Parents,

I have returned some additional worksheets to your child for filing purposes. The children had completed another full Paper 2 as practice paper and I will score it and let you know via either sms or WhatApps with regard to areas that your child would still need to focus on, to be better prepared for the SA2 EL on 26 October.

I have also assigned 5 more EL lessons (with practice quizzes) via McOnline for your child in 3G. This is for additional practice. Please pace your child accordingly during this long break. I will see your child once again on 25 October just a day before the EL paper.

If your child has completed all the assignments via McOnline or has issues going into McOnline, I will see if I can send other assignments via McOnline or via pdf copies to you via email. Please do let me know.

Thank you. Have a good day.

Information on Listening Comprehension

Dear Parents,
For the Listening Comprehension Examination, your child will be tested on picture matching based on sentences read, and for note-taking based on a passage read. It is highly advisable for your child to read through the question paper once they have received it, and to take down notes at the side when they are listening to the passage being read. The passage will be repeated.

All the best to your child for the examinations!

Spelling List for Term 4

29 August 2017

Dear 3G Parents,

Your child was given 2 pieces of holiday homework today. In order to encourage your child to have an interest in writing, I have set up a competition for them to produce 2 stories (each based on the given writing worksheet - one on an enjoyable trip and one on a time when you were disappointed) during the holidays. They can either write in their best handwriting or type. I have informed them that I will be giving prizes to the best 5 entries for each piece of writing, and if there are more excellent entries, there will be more prizes given. They MUST write based on one of the given pictures in the worksheets and I hope that they can work on their pieces of writing and try to improve upon them during the holidays. They can present in a book format or just as a piece of writing on foolscap or plain paper, or on a coloured paper. The purpose is to get the children to write and yet include a fun element. It is hoped that your child will try to write two good pieces of writing during this break.  I have already given them their Spelling list. It is a consolidated list that has taken into account the spelling words missed due to the Term Reviews.

Here's wishing your child a Happy September holiday.
Thank you.
Have a good day.

Dear Parents,

Today we have collected homework due today and shared some good examples with the class - possible endings to the story 'There is a boy under the bed'.  Those with valid reasons have been given extension for their homework till Monday for submission.

We have also learnt what are reflexive pronouns *myself, yourself etc" and how it was used. We then learnt nouns which can be used as adjectives e.g. the Science teacher ( Science is in itself a noun but it is also used as an adjective to describe the noun 'teacher' here). Printed notes have been issued. This is the second set of notes issued for the children on Grammar. The first being the use of 'Both. This is on 'Nouns as adjectives'. The children are to keep them in their green folder.

We then went through L.S. 3.1 to 3.3, and discuss how we can complete the worksheets. The children then started on their worksheets and were to complete them during this weekend as homework.

13 July 2017

Dear Parents,

Today the children explored and read two stories in class based on a different perspective. The first book was 'The True Story of the Three Little Pigs' which is a story retold in the voice of the Big Bad Wolf, showing his side of the story. Then we looked at the STELLAR reader ' There is a boy under the bed' which showed a monster being frightened because there was a boy under his bed. Once again, the children learnt how the story is being told from another perspective.

Their homework today is to provide a reasonable ending paragraph to the story as the story did not have a confirmed ending. We have explored various versions in class and the children were asked to write their proposed ending to the story on foolscap paper. I have attached the photographs that I have taken to show you the story that we have read twice in class, in the event that you may need to let your child review and recall to write the ending.

I have also collected yesterday's homework worksheets. (Note: For the children who have not completed their homework, I have asked them to submit tomorrow.)

P.S. I have also returned the spelling / dictation to your child for corrections and your signature. To be returned to me tomorrow.

Thank you.
Have a wonderful day!

As a number of children was absent from their first Spelling, and as some others did not do as well for their first Spelling, I have done a re-test for the children today. We also had unseen dictation, based on the text that we had read in class previously.

The children were also taught how to use 'both', and homework was issued today and due tomorrow. Homework issued: 2 worksheets (Vocabulary/Grammar, and Editing/Synthesis using 'both').

We also went through the Vocabulary crosswords, highlighting the meanings of these words, before we went through the answers. The crossword worksheets served as a ticket that the children submitted to go for their recess.

Thank you.
Have a wonderful day!

10 July 2017

Dear Parents,

Today we spent time on reading and writing. Time was spent in the school library so that the children could be exposed to a variety of fiction books. They then completed a worksheet which guided them to review the book read, with comments on not only what the book was about, but also on the characters, as well as the parts of the book that they like or dislike.

Homework has been issued today and the children will be completing 2 sheets (4 pages) of worksheets on Vocabulary/Grammar/Editing and Synthesis. It is due tomorrow and we will review the worksheets in class.

Thank you.
Have a  wonderful day!

7 July 2017

Dear Parents,

Today we reviewed grammar (phrasal verbs) and learnt new vocabulary via e-learning. The children noted down vocabulary that they were not familiar with, along with the meanings of the words, as part of their interactive learning process.

No homework issued this weekend as more than half the class will be busy with NDP rehearsal this Saturday once again.

P.S. I will be sending individual messages to you with regards to your child's progress and learning attitude thus far, sometime this weekend.

Thank you.
Have a good weekend.

6 July 2017

Dear Parents,

Today we explored phrasal verbs (e.g. run out of, put away...) via video reinforcement, class reviews and quizzes. We also listened to a story and had an activity (English riddles) at the end of the class.

Homework has been issued yesterday (Composition 6) and is due tomorrow.
There is NO English homework issued today.

Thank you.
Have a wonderful day!

5 July 2017

Dear Parents,
Today we spent time looking into ideas for writing for Composition 6 (on a competition). We looked into various types of competition that the children could write on (e.g. cooking, singing, games and sports, chess) and reminded the children to use one of the pictures (e.g. to write on one of the pictures shown e.g. sports OR to write on a competition not shown in the picture BUT to ensure that there was the inclusion of the medal, the other picture given). They are to write at least 3 paragraphs and to SHOW and not tell for their writing.

We also explored a good piece of writing on the same topic and discussed how the writer for this piece of writing had made it well-written (from the interesting introduction and good conclusion, to good use of SHOW and not tell, as well as using good vocabulary).

Homework issued was to write Composition 6 on a piece of foolscap paper (and to leave a line after writing on each line) and staple behind the question paper. The children were given a deadline till 7 July to complete, but I will also accept the completed work if they are able to complete by tomorrow. This is to give your child ample time to develop the writing and submit a good piece of work.

We then looked into phrasal verbs for grammar, and will explore more tomorrow. We also listened to a story.

Thank you.

Have a wonderful day!

4 July 2017

Dear Parents,
Today we had Spelling 1 and we completed it on a Spelling sheet issued.

We then reviewed our homework done and focused on vocabulary and grammar. Today we learnt the use of 'to' with the base form of the verb, as well as reviewed the use of 'has' and 'have'. We then listened to two stories and had oral comprehension based on one of the stories.

The children were asked to recall a game or competition that they had taken part or seen so that they could write about it in the next lesson. We would be looking into writing the next lesson.

We ended the session with a word game, whereby each group tried to guess a word puzzle with a given category.

NO homework issued today for English. Homework will be issued tomorrow.
We have also collected Companion Booklet 11 today from those who had brought it. The few who had forgotten had been spoken to, and advised to bring for submission tomorrow.

Thank you.
Have a wonderful day!

29 June 2017

Dear Parents,
For these first 3 weeks, our English lessons will be at 11.30 a.m. and we will start with the snack break. The children will be having their snack while listening to a story as I will schedule my Reading period then. After the first three weeks, the P.E. teacher will be taking back this time slot and I will be taking the children at 9.30 a.m. This temporary change is due to the fact that the P.E. teacher needed to work with the children at a particular venue during the 9.30 a.m. time slot for these 3 weeks.

Today the children will be listening to 2 stories, and then we will be looking at informal competitions that children have among themselves via videos and reflections/discussions. This is related to our theme of competitions (from our STELLAR reader ' The Blink-Off') and we will be writing on this theme at a later stage.

There is NO homework issued today as the L.S. 1.1-1.5 worksheets will all be due on Friday. We will review the homework worksheets before I collect for grading to ensure that all clarifications are made.

There is no particular item to bring for English tomorrow. I will be providing the necessary resources.
Thank you. Have a wonderful day!

28 June 2017

Dear Parents,

Today we had ICAS (Writing) for those who had signed up and for the others, I gave them a writing assignment (to contribute to our class noticeboard and as part of our Reading assignment) to do either a book review or a book character review.

We also reviewed with those who were in class (I will do another review tomorrow) Grammar components that they had learnt previously (pronouns, conjunctions, adverbs and punctuation for dialogue). Those who were at the NDP briefing will get their review tomorrow.

Homework issued (due tomorrow - with extension given for those at the NDP briefing) will be LS 1.1 to 1.5. The children had already started with guided classwork in class and they were to finish this stack of worksheets at home as homework.

Thank you.
Have a wonderful day!

Spelling List for Term 3

27 June 2017

Dear Parents,
Today is the first lesson with your child. We spent some time going through our class rules and routines. I have issued them a green folder which must be brought for EL lessons. It will be light as only the score sheet (for reward points) and spelling lists and at most the homework or handouts will be there and all extra items will be removed for submission or filing after completion/ marking in the normal Blue ring EL file.
- We started on the first Stellar Reader ' The Blink-off' today and the children enjoyed two rounds of reading, followed by an oral comprehension quiz based on this text (with focus on comprehension as well as pronunciation of ending sounds). We then rounded off the lesson with a story read to them 'The Library Lion'.

Homework issued today and due tomorrow will be a letter to me (Miss Ow Yeong) to introduce themselves to me (their likes and dislikes, family, as well as the type of English lessons that they have enjoyed). There is no word limit for this piece of assignment and they are to use a piece of foolscap paper for this letter.

Spelling will be every Tuesday and it will start next Tuesday. I have issued the printed Spelling List for Term 3 today. It will be uploaded in the next post as well for your information.

I look forward to our partnership. My sms update to you regarding your child will be between 7 July to 9 July.

Thank you.
Have a wonderful day!
